This is a very personal reminder from one of BuDhaGirl's founders, Jessica Jesse. The exhibit is Ladder for Booker T. Washington by Martin Puryear at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the young man is Jessica's son, Charlie. The image represents the long climb ahead. Looking up is already a positive beginning.
Reminder measures 1.5"h x .875"w
Before the photograph was taken, Charlie fell victim to the throes of modern-day young adulthood: substance abuse, disconnectedness, and manipulation. This resulted in a severe physical and mental crisis. Today Charlie is healthy, clean, and in college. Seeing a family member loose their ability to function in our world, and possibly never be able to lead a normal life, to then thrive and become whole again, is a testament to the sequence: intention, action and reality. Charlie, and only Charlie, decided what his intention would be, then he took the very difficult steps required to turn intention into action. With perseverance, action became reality.
