The Hamsa (hand) or Khmasa (five) is an ancient talisman that predates Christianity and Islam. It has been called "the hand of Fatima,” after Mohammed’s daughter and the “the hand of Mary,” after Jesus’s mother. This palm-shaped amulet is universally recognized as a symbol of blessings, power and strength. In particular, it is seen as a defense against the evil eye. It is also a powerful talisman for travelers. The hand can be depicted with the fingers spread apart to ward off evil, or close together to bring good luck.
The Hamsa depicted with a fish are even more powerful; Jacob explains in Genesis 48:16: "The water covers the fish of the sea so the eye has no power over them" (Berakhot 55b).
